This street is full of interesting brick houses, and is the first stretch of the ancient via Francigena which connected northern Europe to Rome. Many inns, banks, stables and hospitals grew up along it. Pilgrims on their way to Siena could rest at the Magione – the church of S. Pietro alla Magione offered spiritual nourishment. This church – mentioned as early as 998 – still has its Romanesque façade. At the beginning of Via Campansi there is a wonderful panorama of the Chianti hills, flanked with villas and farms, and the outline of the Basilica dell'Osservanza.
